What is a prop firm challenge?

A prop firm challenge is a trading evaluation: you pay a one-time fee, trade a simulated account toward a profit target without breaking the loss limits, and if you pass, you move to a funded account that pays a share of the simulated profit. It is how a prop firm checks that you can follow risk rules before it funds you.

How does a prop firm challenge work?

A prop firm challenge, also called an evaluation, is a test you trade on a simulated account. The firm sets a profit target and a few risk limits. You pay a fee once, and if you reach the target without breaking a limit, you pass and receive a funded trading account.

The goal of the test is not to find the trader with the biggest return. It is to find traders who can make a return while controlling losses. That is why most of the rules are about how much you can lose, not how much you can make. For the bigger picture of how firms work, start with what a prop firm is.

A challenge can have one phase or two. Some firms also sell instant funding, which skips the challenge entirely in exchange for tighter limits.

What rules does a prop firm challenge have?

Almost every challenge is built from the same four rules. The numbers change from firm to firm and program to program, but the logic is the same.

Rule What it means What happens if you break it
Profit target The gain you need to reach to pass, as a percent of the starting balance Nothing, you just have not passed yet
Daily loss limit The most you can lose in one day The challenge ends
Max loss (drawdown) A floor the account must never touch, static or trailing The challenge ends
Consistency or best day rule A cap on how much of your profit can come from one day Varies: often you keep trading until the ratio is met

Some firms add a time limit or a minimum number of trading days. OctoFunded challenges have no time limit.

Two rules decide most outcomes. The daily loss limit stops one bad session from turning into a disaster. The max loss sets the total room you have, and whether it is fixed or follows your highest balance changes how you should trade. See static vs trailing drawdown and trailing drawdown explained.

What are the types of prop firm challenge?

The main split is how many phases you trade before you reach a funded account. Here is how the three OctoFunded programs compare.

2-Step 1-Step Instant Funded
Phases before funding 2 1 No evaluation phase
Profit target 10%, then 5% 10% No evaluation phase
Daily loss limit 5% 4% 3%
Max loss 10% static 8% trailing 6% trailing
Best day cap See the program rules 50% of total profit 20% of total profit
Profit split 80% 80% 80%
Fee refund With the first payout With the first payout No

The pattern is a trade between speed and room. More phases come with wider limits. Fewer phases come with tighter ones. The full comparison, with dollar figures, is in 1-Step vs 2-Step vs Instant.

Worked example on a 2-Step. On an illustrative $100,000 simulated account, phase 1 asks you to reach $110,000. The 10% static max loss puts the floor at $90,000, and the 5% daily limit means you can lose up to $5,000 in a day. Once phase 1 is passed, phase 2 asks for a 5% target, which is $5,000 on this account. Pass both and you move to a funded account.

The same account on a 1-Step. One target of $10,000, a $4,000 daily limit and a floor that starts at $92,000 and rises as the account makes new highs. You also need to respect the best day rule: with $10,000 of total profit, no single day can be above $5,000.

How to take a challenge at OctoFunded

The fee is paid once, in crypto. See how to pay for a prop firm challenge with crypto and how the challenge fee refund works. Every rule is listed in the program rules before you pay.

Why do traders fail prop firm challenges?

Most failed challenges do not fail on the profit target. They fail on a loss limit. The common patterns are well known:

  • Risk per trade too large for the daily limit. A position size that feels normal on a personal account can break a 4% or 5% daily limit in a handful of losing trades.
  • Chasing the target. Raising size after a loss to get back on track is the quickest way to reach the floor.
  • Misreading a trailing drawdown. On a trailing max loss, the floor moves up with your profit, so the room you have is measured from your highest balance, not from the start.
  • One oversized day. Under a best day rule, a single big win can mean you need much more total profit before the ratio is met. The consistency rule guide explains why.

None of these are about finding better trades. They are about sizing and patience, which is exactly what the challenge is designed to test.

How do you prepare for a prop firm challenge?

Treat the rules as part of your strategy, not as obstacles around it.

  1. Read every rule before you pay. Know how the daily loss is measured, whether the max loss is static or trailing, and whether a best day cap applies.
  2. Size from the daily limit down. Decide how many losing trades in a row you want to survive in one day, then divide the daily limit by that number.
  3. Pick the program that fits your history. If your results come from a few large winners, wider limits help. If they come from many small days, tighter limits may not bother you.
  4. Use the time you have. With no time limit, there is no reason to force trades near the end of a month.
  5. Plan automated strategies too. If you run an EA, test its worst day against the daily limit. OctoFunded is a prop firm that allows EAs on every program.

What happens after you pass?

Once you pass, you trade a funded trading account on simulated capital. At OctoFunded, you receive 80% of the simulated profit, every 14 days, in USDT or USDC, subject to the program rules. Each payout has a public transaction hash you can verify on a block explorer, and on the 1-Step and 2-Step your fee comes back with the first payout. FAQ

How does a prop firm challenge work?

You pay a one-time fee and trade a simulated account. To pass, you reach the profit target while staying inside the daily loss limit, the max loss and any other program rules. Pass, and you move to a funded account that pays a share of the simulated profit, subject to the program rules.

How much does a prop firm challenge cost?

The fee depends on the program and the account size. At OctoFunded it is a one-time fee paid in crypto, with no subscription, and on the 1-Step and 2-Step it comes back with your first payout. Current fees are listed on the pricing section of octofunded.com.

How long does a prop firm challenge take?

It depends on the firm. OctoFunded challenges have no time limit, so you can take as long as you need to reach the target inside the rules.

What happens if I fail a prop firm challenge?

Breaking the daily loss limit or the max loss ends that challenge account. At OctoFunded the fee refund on the 1-Step and 2-Step comes with the first payout, so a failed challenge does not get it. You can buy a new challenge if you want to try again.

Which is easier, a 1-Step or a 2-Step challenge?

Neither is easier for everyone. A 1-Step has one 10% target but tighter limits at OctoFunded: 4% daily loss, 8% trailing max loss and a 50% best day cap. A 2-Step has two targets, 10% then 5%, with a 5% daily loss and a 10% static max loss. Pick the one whose limits fit your worst week.
